Background
Russia is one of countries that has a free education
system guaranteed to all citizens by the Constitution. This led Russians not to
miss their opportunity to continue their study up to university. Even, by the
free fee of education, they prefer
to choose another country as a place where
they continue their study including Indonesia. In Indonesia, we can see many
foreigners who get their education mostly in the level of undergraduate and
post-graduate program. This kind of situation may creates our curiousity of why
some of them prefer to get their education in Indonesia while we see that most
of Indonesians compete each other to get a great opportunity to study in
another country, like Australia, America, England, etc. For this reason, we are
encouraged to know a lot about the reason of foreigners who choose to study in
Indonesia, so in this chance we have an observation through the Russia’s
students who study in Indonesia especially in Islamic State University of Malang.
The majority of foreign students in this university have the same background of
religion in which it is related to their university choice which is based on
Islamic orientation. In our observation, we asked two students of Russia, named
Ms. Patimat (read : Fatimah) and Mr.
Haji Umar who were from Dagestan, a part of Moscow, Russia. They study in
Economy Faculty by taking Management Department of the first semester and they
have lived in Malang for five months.
b.
Questions’
Problem
Through this observation, we have
divided three important things that we want to analyze and they consist of :
1. What
is the reason of choosing Malang as a place to study?
2. How
did they adapt and did they face a cultural shock?
3. What
are their point of views about Indonesia?
c.
Goals
of Observation
The goals of observation that we want to
achieve are :
1. To
know their reason of choosing Malang as a place to study
2. To
know the way of their adaptation and whether they face a cultural adjustment
3. To
understand their point of views about Indonesia

Discussion
1.
Reason of Study
Ms. Patimat and Mr. Haji stated that
they get a scholarship and choose Indonesia as the
recommendation of their parents especially as the place for their study. They
agreed to continue their study in Malang by taking Management of Economy
Faculty in Islamic State University of Malang because they believe that
Economy-Management have been already well-known in Russia and they hopethat
their dreams as acountants in a Russian’s bank can be achieved after graduating
from this university. Moreover, the weather in Malang is very condusive for
them to study and the most important one is that they are able to learn deeper
about Arabian language as well as the religion. In addition, as we know that
Arabian language has been a international language. So, in short we can say that
the choice basically was their parents one and these both follower of Mahzab
Imam Syafi’i have admitted that they just followed their parents as they
thought that the choice was exactly good for them.
2.
Cultural Shock
Both of Ms. Patimat and her brother Mr.
Haji spent their childhood in Russia until they graduated from Senior High
School. It could not be neglected that they face a cultural shockas well as a mental
isolation at the first time
they moved to Malang. A cultural shock that they feel was the difficulty of
using Indonesian language. It was proven that although they have known little
about Indonesian language, they still use the aid of translator in Google and
ask their locutors to speak up slowly, so they will be able to catch the
meaning of the statements. They also got a mental isolation in which it is a
situation when the new comers feel homesick because they have been away from
their family and their close friends. They solve this situation by
communicating with their parents through the Skype (video cam application).
To solve their problem of
having mental isolation period, they try to adapt with the culture of Indonesia
which is really different. As a foreigner in Malang where they should study,
they try hard to be patient when they should wait in line to take a bath with
another student. In spite of their culture in Russia, they do not like to waste
the time only to wait something. In their mind only focus about something that valuable
and useful for their life. Almost all their time, they spend to achieve what
they want. “Time is money”, this principle hasalready planted since they were
child. It means that to do something must be punctual to save their time for
another activity.
Besides, living in Malang is
too hard for them to survive their new life in different place. One of the complex
difficulties to adapt in Malang is the food. As Russian, it is difficult to eat
rice, because they like bread rather than rice. Yet, as long as they try to
adapt the habit of Indonesian people, they can eat rice even though it is not
their favorite one. Their favorite foods are bread, meat and chicken that sometimes
Mr. Haji eats together with his other Russian friends in small stand with the
existing menu. Despite they know that living in Malang is quite different with
Russia, they can enjoy their life. What they do is only how they can run their
life here; the one that they are caring about is their education. Therefore,
something about cultural adjustment is not a big thing for them because they
still can adapt and accept it well. Yet, talking about education is the most
important that they want to concern in living here.
3. Point of
View of Indonesia
As they have already been in here for 5 months, they
see Indonesia especially Malang is a beautiful city in which Malang has a good
weather, and fresh. Besides, based on their knowledge, they see there are a lot
of vehicles in road that does not happened in Russia. In Russia, only some
people have vehicles, especially the car because they need this transportation
for going to work. Besides, they also have some public transportation such as:
Bus and Train.
They also think the behavior of Indonesian is unique,
such as: the girls tend to love smiling and laughing with their friends even if
there is no something funny, theyare humble and friendly, and they like to
smile with strangers when they passed by in the road. It is really different
with Russian who is stubborn, individualist, and always wants to get what they
want. Therefore, when they come to Malang, they cannot feel comfort to wait in
line only for taking a bath. They think Indonesian work slowly, and also do not
have strict rules. In Russia, people who go to dormitory will get strict rules
to be obeyed and will get a hard punishment when they break the law. If In
Indonesia, they think the rule is more relax and tolerant for students. Yet,
they still like to live in Malang, especially in their dormitory of Islamic
State University.
CHAPTER III
·
Conclusion
Based on our research, we can find that Russian is
more different with Indonesian. It is not only based on the behavior of the
citizen which Russian is quite stubborn, but it is also about the social life.
In here, Russian tends to be stricter with their rules while Indonesia seems
work slowly with a good behavior. Yet, it does not make them feel ashamed or
regret in getting their education in Indonesia, especially in Islamic State
University of Malang. They can oblige and adapt with their new circumstances in
which they can feel comfort to live in here.
