“ OBSERVATION ABOUT EDUCATION OF UNIVERSITY IN MALANG”

CHAPTER I
Background
a.Background
Since the Dutch entered the city of Malang in 1767, the Dutch built a lot of educational facilities, governments, tourisms, and transportations. They were the forerunners of the denominator and the creators of Malang as a “Kota Pelajar” where it still clings to the present. The oldest university in Malang is Malang State University that was originally called the Teacher’s Training College. Built in 1954, State University of Malang (UM) becomes  pioneers of the establishment of other universities in the city of Malang. Only later after it appeared the other universities both public and private as Brawijaya University (UB), State Islamic University of Malang (Malang UIN), Academy of Agricultural Extension (APP), Polytechnic of Malang (POLINEMA; Polytechnic UB), Health Polytechnic of Malang (POLTEKES), and there is a State Accounting College (STAN), Polytechnic of Malang (POLTEKOM).
Some of the leading private universities include: University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UNMUH), Merdeka University (UNMER), Gajayana University  (UNIGA), Islamic University of Malang(UNISMA), Atlas Nusantara Technical High School, College of Informatics & Computer Indonesia, Kanjuruhan University, STIE Malangkucecwara, ASIA Higher Education, University Widyagama, Wisnuwardhana University, National Institute of Technology, STIBA Malang, Ma Chung University, School of Theology Satyabhakti, School of Philosophy and Theology Widya Sasana and so forth. As a city of education, many students come from outside Malang who later settled in Malang, mainly from eastern Indonesia such as Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Maluku and Papua, even from abroad.
Based on that problem we had decided to do an observation and compiled it in a form of paper about why Malang is called by “Kota Pelajar and the reasons of students in choosing Malang as the place for study.
The observation was done through the interview of four informants, they are:
a)      Mr. Agus Sunyoto M.Fil ( A Lecturer of Faculty of Culture Studies in Brawijaya University)
b)      Kozlovskiy Denis Andreevich  (The First Semester Russians Student of Indonesian Literature, in State University of Malang)

c)      Norah Hanginiaina (The First Semester Madagascar Student of Indonesian Literature, in State University of Malang)

d)      Intan Melanie Putri (The best 2010 graduate of Brawijaya University for English Literature from Madiun)
b.Question’s Problem
1.      What is the main factor which caused Malang called by “Kota Pelajar”?
2.      What is the main reason of the students from another city and abroad why they choose Malang as the place for study?
C. Goals of Observation
a)      To know the main factor which caused Malang called by “Kota Pelajar”.
b)       To know the main reason of the students from another city and abroad why they choose Malang as the place for study.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION AND EXPLANATION

Based on our interview with Mr. Agus Sunyoto, M.Fil about the reasons of why Malang deserve to be called as “Kota Pelajar” in Indonesia are as follows:

1.      First, it deals with the location and the conducive climate. Malang is in the upland and surrounded by the mountains that cause the air of the region in Malang to be in cool and fresh. This climate is very suitable for the students who want to continue their education in this town where it is popular with its title as “Apple City”. If we compare among Jakarta and Surabaya where it is very hot in the afternoon, conversely Malang is exactly cooler than those two towns. This situation will be the most conducive one to support the learning process. Therefore, the cooler and fresher airs in Malang have been the most superior aspect to be well-known as “Kota Pelajar” that are not owned by another city.
2.       Second, a reachable transportation, such as an urban transportation (Angkot). The students do not need to be afraid of the fee. They are just asked to pay for 2,500.00 IDR to go to the college without being doubt of coming late. Both school and college are located in strategy areas where they are passed by the urban transportation (Angkot).
3.      Third is about the cost of living that is relatively affordable. In Malang, we will not find any difficulty to look for the boarding house because there are many boarding houses and leased out houses that are really reachable for the students who come from outside Malang. Besides, the price of daily needs including foods have been appropriated based on their economy capacity, moreover the areas around the college are very prosperous for the boarding houses as well as the leased-out ones. For example, in Malang we can get a quite good boarding house with many facilities only by paying 150,000.00 IDR per month, while in Surabaya we have to pay for 400,000.00 IDR per month for the same facilities. In short, the cost of living in Malang is able to reach by every student who studies in this town.
4.      The fourth is related to the number of tourism places and the shopping centers. As the result, Malang becomes the main tourism destination in East Java. This cannot be doubtful because there are so many interesting tourism places there. There is Kawi Mountain that is famous for a spiritual place; Bromo Mountain as the main target for seeing a beautiful sunrise or the custom ceremony of Tengger tribe. Another places that  we can find such as,Taman Ria Sengkaling, Coban Rondo Waterfall, Wendit Water Park, Singosari Temple, Rawa Indah, Tambak Asri, Sendangbiru, Brawijaya Museum, Taman Wisata Tlogomas, and etc. There, we will also be able to visit the provided shopping centers like Mall Malang Town Square (MATOS), Mall Olympic Garden (MOG), Plaza Dieng, etc. Therefore, it will not be difficult to find recreation places in Malang, especially during weekend and holiday; the places are so crowded with the visitors both inside and outside Malang. So, when the students feel bored of the assignments, those can be the alternatives for them to be visited to refresh their mind from their hard activities for a moment.

5.      The last is about the number of existed universities. This directly led Malang to be categorized as “Kota Pelajar”. Some universities, such as Brawijaya, State University of Malang, and Islamic State one are still the most popular ones. For the private ones, we will find Muhammadiyah University of Malang, Merdeka University, and the newest one is Machung University. There is also Institute of National Technology (ITN) .College of Government Accountancy (STAN),State Medical Politechnic of Malang (POLINEMA).College of Computer and Informatics Indonesia (STIKI),and there are still many universities in this town. The most interesting one that we can find in Malang is that it becomes the education center of Religious nuance where there are many existed “Pondok Pesantren” and divinity school. For example: Satyabhakti Divinity School (STT Sati), Salem Divinity School.

Based on our research through,Kozlovskiy Denis Andreevich , Norah Hanginiaina, and  Intan Melanie Putri about the reason why they choose Malang as the place for study are as follows :
A.     Quality
Malang is a city that most preferred by the majority of provinces in Indonesia as their learning goals in addition to Yogyakarta. From year to year the numbers of students who come to another city even abroad are increase. At least three thousands of students come every year to Malang. There was no denial that the quality and the quantity provided by the education system in Malang are very adequate for the students in Indonesia today.
In terms of teaching for example, most universities in Malang recruit graduates from abroad as the main teaching staff in order to improve the quality of teaching is considered to be adequate to provide the best education for students including female students, in addition to meet the demands of the times such as during the era of globalization today, and is no less important to compete with others. For example, universities such as UB of faculty of cultural studies, and some lecturers drawn from abroad such as Japan, France, and the British for example: Angelina Potts who come from America.
In terms of students, some universities in Malang have contributed to the rapid advancement of the education system by producing the best graduates. This is an evidence at one university in the State University of Malang or UM. At least 98.35% or 3279 were cum laude graduates. Reporting by Okezone.com on September 19, 2011. This proves that the development of education in Malang, especially in college shows a significant improvement.
In terms of facilities, some universities in Malang have been providing qualified facilities to support teaching and learning activities in accordance with the needs of every study program. For example the faculty of Fisheries, UB which provides research site located at the Source of Sand as a place to practice.

B.      Geographical site of Malang
Malang has good views, offering all the needs of small city. Malang is an international education, so that from a student’s perspective, Malang is convenient, clean and green, and offers many kinds of accommodation choices, including home stays.
The average climate of Malang is around 22-25 0C in dry season and rainy season. So these conditions make Malang very good as a place to study.
Malang is also located on the hilly land at the height of 450- 467 meters above the sea level. It is surrounded by five mountains Arjuno, Panderman, Banyak, Bromo, Semeru, Anjasmoro, Welirang, Kawi and Kelud. Through the illustration of location, Malang is convenient for studying and now it becomes a home stay for about 25 different countries’ students around the world who study in many campuses in Malang. International students such as Norah and Denish will find Malang as the city which has a safe environment, socially and politically stable and is the city which economically is not expensive.
C.      Public Interest
Most of universities in Malang are also supported by the community. They give a great contribution that is like providing boarding-lodging and contract. This contribution also brings benefits to both parties. In addition, the existences of universities in Malang have changed the mindset about the importance of education to achieve prosperity. This situation is at once profitable because the government’s program of agreeing to the growth of Malang in university means the existences also have to minimize the level of stupidity.
Not only the interest of society in Malang but also for those who are from the outside ones. This can be seen from the parents’ enthusiastic to send their sons and daughters to study in Malang. The notion that Malang as a ”Kota Pelajar”  is so entrenched among outsiders and there is no reason for refusing even though the costs are not a cheap.

D.     The characterization  of  Malang’s people
All the foreigners who had come to Malang agree that Malang’s people are nice and friendly. And this kind of statement can be proven from Norah and Denish who have been already living in Malang for five months. When the foreigners walked in the street, then suddenly the people smiled and greeted them although they don’t know each other yet. The most important thing about Malang’s people is that they are helpful person .When they need a help, Malang’s people will directly help them. So, that is the reason why Norah and Denish are so endure to live in Malang.

CHAPTER III
CONCLUSSION

·         Based on our research we can conclude that Malang is reasonable called as “Kota Pelajar .It can be proven for the informants that have been interviewed. But the most important thing that The Government of Malang should do is that to keep this kind of labeling always be there and exists in Malang. So it needs supports from the society itself and also all the aspects in Malang.
